TS #15 – Terminator in Mosquitoes?

A Company called Oxitec is all set to release a genetically-modified batch of mosquitoes in the US state of Florida this spring.

Why?

  • There has been a rising case of mosquito-borne – potentially deadly – diseases over the past decade.
  • These are mostly transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
  • They have become increasingly resistant to insecticides forcing scientists to look for other measures to control them.
  • This batch of mosquitoes – The OX5034 – are all males(unlike females, doesn’t bite) and are programmed with a gene that will lead to the female offsprings produced to die in their early larval stages, thus containing the population of disease transmitting variant. Basically Terminator in Mosquitoes!
